Suicide Ideation

Updated: Jun 2, 2018

How do I know when someone I love is suffering from Suicide Ideation? What is Suicide Ideation?

“If you were born with the weakness to fall, you were born with the strength to rise.” — Rupi Kaur

What is suicide ideation? It is thinking about or planning suicide. Although this does not always end in the final act of suicide it can just include fleeting thoughts of suicide. Suicidal thoughts are common in many people especially when they are undergoing a stressful situation or depression. People who have a family history of mental illness are more likely to have suicidal thoughts. Causes of these kinds of thoughts include depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and depression. Some of the symptoms include the following, feeling trapped or hopeless, feeling intense emotional pain, having an abnormal preoccupation with violence, dying, or death. Having giant mood swings of either being happy or sad, being in a heightened state of anxiety, changes with personality or sleeping patterns, engaging in risky behavior, giving things away to prepare for their death, increased isolation, talking about being a burden to other people, or talking about death.

If you fear anything is serious and might lead to death call 911 or the suicide hotline.
